Rotation Schedule
Neurology residents typically spend 14 months on an inpatient service,
three months with consultation responsibilities, six months in elective
rotations, three months of electroencephalography and epilepsy, and
three months of electromyography and neuromuscular diseases.
A sample schedule
follows:
PGY2: The first year of neurology training consists
of rotations through clinical services for adult and pediatric neurology
as well as three
months in consultation.
PGY3: During the second year, residents
spend four months in inpatient services, two months in consult services
and three months in EEG.
PGY4: During the third year of neurology
training, residents spend three months in inpatient services, one month
in EEG,
three months in EMG and
five months in elective rotations.
Elective rotations include:
EEG and evoked potentials
EMG and nerve conduction velocity studies

Residents rotate through clinics for general neurology,
memory disorders, headaches, seizures, pediatric neurology, neuromuscular
disorders, specialized disorders and lumbar puncture.
On-Call Schedule
The usual schedule has the resident on call an average of one out of
five nights throughout the residency. During PGY1-2, residents are
on in-house call, responding to nighttime emergencies and managing
the care
of the acutely ill. During PGY3 and 4, residents have greater and supervisory
authority with responsibility for making important patient case decisions,
coordinating day-to-day activities of neurology service teams and providing
inpatient consultation, under the supervision of the attending neurologist.
Educational Activities
Numerous lectures and conferences are presented each week. Weekly conferences
focus on clinical neurophysiology, epilepsy, basic neuroscience,
neuroradiology, EEG/EMG, neurosurgery and neurology research. A grand
round lecture
and a Medical University Hospital neuro case conference also are
held once
a week. Twice a month, conferences on neuropathology, neuro-ophthalmology
and muscle biopsy are held. The neurology journal club is held monthly.
