Overview
MUSC Leading the Way
  Neurosurgery Research at MUSC
  Primary Research Interests

MUSC's Department of Neurological Surgery is South Carolina's only academic neurosurgical program. Only here do the benefits of the most advanced, highest technology patient care, cutting edge neurosurgical research and advanced neurosurgical education come together in a single location to provide the synergy that leads to solutions to complex neurosurgical problems and the unwavering search for the best possible outcomes.

ADVANCED, HIGH TECHNOLOGY PATIENT CARE

  • Intraoperative frameless image guidance (allows the surgeon to follow the location of the operation on the CT on MRI scan).

  • Computerized framed stereotaxis (particularly for very precise deep brain stimulation and lesioning, provides a full 2 dimensional map of the brain with the path of the probe displayed).

  • Real-time intraoperative ultrasound (images changes during surgery, linked to frameless image guidance) Neuroendoscopy (utilizing small {1-6 mm} scopes to perform or assist brain and spinal surgery).

  • Stereotactic radiosurgery with multimicroleaf columniation (precisely focused radiation to create, control or destroy lesions in the brain without open surgery).

  • Laser neurosurgery.
