CELEBRATION of NEUROSURGERY at MUSC
On June 16, 2001, the Department of Neurological Surgery hosted
the Celebration of Neurosurgery at MUSC held on campus at the Storm
Eye Institute. The Celebration was well attended and was a great
success. We have included some photos taken during the Celebration.
Dr.
Russell Travis, the first graduate of the neurosurgery training
program at MUSC in 1968, presented perspectives on his journey from
his first year, being the only resident in neurosurgery, through
his presidency of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons
(AANS).
In addition we had four former faculty members of the department
in attendance. Julian Youmans, the founding Chairman of the Department
was in attendance. Professor Shokei Yamada, who was one of the first
junior faculty to join Dr. Youmans, and who subsequently went on
the become Professor and Chairman of the Department at Loma Linda
University, came from California and shared his experience in tethered
cord research. Also, Brian Cuddy and Stephen Rawe were in attendance,
both have private practices in Charleston.
Dr. Phanor Perot, Professor and Chairman Emeritus, presented a
history on the Department of Neurological Surgery at MUSC. Dr. Cristian
Vera, Associate Professor, gave an inspired lecture on understanding
the nervous system.
Portraits were presented of Dr. Phanor Perot and Dr. Cristian Vera.
In addition to the portrait, Dr. Perot waspresented with a set of
dental dissectors identical to those he has given to each graduating
resident except these were gold plated.

It was a great experience to meet other members of the MUSC neurosurgery
family who we did not previously know, including former and current
residents.
