CLERKSHIPS

The Division of Neurosurgery encourages students interested in pursuing a career in Neurosurgery to complete an elective clerkship in Neurosurgery. Our division offers a four week clerkship.

The Medical University of South Carolina has a limited number of clinical electives available for students from other medical schools who have completed their clinical core curriculum (Medicine, OB/GYN, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Surgery). Visiting students are limited to a maximum of two (2) four-week electives at MUSC. Medical University of South Carolina students have first priority in selecting rotations and consequently we cannot always accommodate visiting students at the time or in the discipline requested. Visiting students are students with current status in an accredited medical school (USMLE).

The Medical University requires two (2) months notice of any visiting student application. For information about clerkships and to obtain an application for a clerkship you may call Pam Troneck, Director of Student Affairs in the Dean's Office, College of Medicine (843) 792-2081 or write to Ms. Troneck.

Mail to:
Ms. Pam Troneck, Director of Student Affairs,
Medical University of South Carolina,
96 Jonathan Lucas Street,
Suite 601,
College Of Medicine,
Charleston, SC 29425-2201.

The Dean's office at MUSC will send with the application a fact sheet for visiting students. That fact sheet covers individual student responsibilities regarding malpractice insurance, personal medical expenses, housing availability, parking, evaluation forms and cancellations. In regards to cancellations, the fact sheet has this word of caution: "All schools look with considerable disdain on those students who, after reserving a clerkship, fail to show up or give notification of a change in plans. If you must cancel a reservation, please notify the department involved and the Dean's Office - College of Medicine. We would appreciate two months notice of cancellation. This will provide a chance for other visiting students to participate or enable the division to readjust its teaching program accordingly.
