PEDIATRIC NEUROONCOLOGY
Tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) are a leading cause of death and disability in children. The Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Program (PNOP) at the MUSC Children’s Hospital recognizes the enormity of the diagnosis of a brain or spinal tumor in a child, and the need for superb coordination of care. We are working with members of the greater community of clinicians, including pediatricians in the area to quickly recognize the symptoms and signs of a CNS tumor and how they differ from other mimicking conditions. Our neuroradiologists use the latest technology to image the tumors and their effects on the brain. The PNOP neurosurgeons have the experience and “touch” to safely remove some of the most complex lesions while preserving normal function. After careful study of the tumors by the neuropathologists, the radiation oncologists and pediatric oncologists are called upon by the program director to discuss treatment options together with radiology, pathology, neurosurgery and other key members of the team. The PNOP offers a “one-stop” clinic experience that facilitates interactions between team members in the same location at the same time. Thus, families of children with CNS tumors seen at MUSC are ensured of optimal communication between all the key specialists which then decreases the overall burden of coordination and maintaining information flows. The PNOP is proud of the long term relationships that develop with partner-families. In addition, PNOP members are hard at work in the Darby Children’s Research Institute developing and refining better therapies for the future.
