ADULT EPILEPSY PROGRAM
The MUSC Adult Epilepsy Program provides a multidisciplinary
approach to the management of epilepsy. Patients with medically
intractable epilepsy may be candidates for surgery to remove
epileptic brain foci. In conjunction with Paul Pritchard, M.D.,
Director of the Adult Epilepsy Clinic, the Department of Neurological
Surgery offers the most up-to-date techniques for the surgical
treatment of epilepsy. Many of these procedures are conducted
using the latest in frameless as well as frame-based stereotactic
computer-assisted guidance techniques. The following surgical
procedures are offered: extraoperative cortical stimulation
mapping using grids and/or depth electrodes, temporal lobectomy,
selective amygdalohippocampectomy, subpial transection, corpus
callosotomy, and hemispherectomy. For patients who are not candidates
for resective surgery, vagal nerve stimulation (link to Cyberonics).is
offered. Although still in the early investigational stages
and not yet available at MUSC, studies are underway investigating
deep brain stimulation as another reversible therapy for intractable
epilepsy.
