ACOUSTIC NEUROMA OVERVIEW
Acoustic neuroma, also known as vestibular schwannoma
or acoustic neurilemoma) is a benign neoplasm of the vestibular
nerve that is a well known but relatively uncommon cause of unilateral
hearing loss. In the present age, it is best detected by gadolinium
enhancement. While treatment at one time was exclusively surgical
either through a neuro-otological approach or a neurosurgical
approach, collaboration among neurotologists, neurosurgeons and
radiation oncologists, as well as a better understanding of the
natural history the disease, now provides patients with options
ranging from watchful waiting through stereotactic radiosurgery
(nonoperative tumor control) to several different surgical approaches
depending on the patient's specific circumstances.
