Braxton B. Wannamaker, M.D.

Dr. Wannamaker retired from the practice of neurology in 2004. Previously, he had served on the faculty of MUSC and in private practice in Charleston and in Orangeburg, South Carolina. He now heads a small foundation and conducts research.

After receiving his B.S. from Clemson University in 1962, Dr. Wannamaker received his M.D. from the MUSC. He completed his internship, neurology residency and NIH research fellowship (Neurochemistry) at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals in Madison.

Dr. Wannamaker has served various positions at MUSC including the Director of the EEG Laboratory and the Director of the Seizure Unit. He subsequently developed the Epilepsy Unit at Roper Hospital in Charleston, SC.

Dr. Wannamaker has research interests in sudden death, the clinical pharmacology of antiepileptic drugs and the epidemiology of epilepsy. His research has been published in various journals. He also served on the editorial board of Epilepsia.

A former member of the Epilepsy Foundation of South Carolina Board of Directors, Dr. Wannamaker has also served on the Professional Advisory Board and as Chairman of the Continuing and Professional Education Committee for the Epilepsy Foundation of America. As a member of the American Epilepsy Society since 1976, he has enjoyed working on various committees including Chair of Continuing Education and Chair of the Research Recognition and Awards committees. In 1991, Dr. Wannamaker served as president of the American Epilepsy Society. He now serves as Chair of the Lennox Fund and is active on several committees and task forces.
