Jonathan J. Halford, MD

Assistant Professor of Neurology


Dr. Halford is a native of South Carolina and grew up in Charleston. He graduated Cum Laude from Duke University with a major in Religious Studies in 1990. After time off to work in medical missions in the Amazon area of Brazil, he attended medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina where he graduated in 1996. He was a neuro-anatomy instructor part-time as a medical student and he won the AMSA Special Appreciation Award from for teaching medical students in 1993.

After medical school, he spent six years training at Duke University Medical Center where he completed a dual neurology-psychiatry residency training program and a neurophysiology fellowship. He accepted a faculty position in the Department of Neurosciences at MUSC in 2003.

Dr. Halford cares for epilepsy patients both at MUSC and at the Charleston Veterans Hospital. He is very involved in epilepsy research in three areas. First, he works with epilepsy patients in clinical trials of new epilepsy medications. Secondly, he studies the MRI scans of patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. Third, he studies computer analysis of electroencephalograms (EEG) to detect signs of epilepsy.
