Stroke and neurocritical
care specializes in the care of patients with acute, life-threatening
injuries to the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and muscle.
Patients with acute
ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke, traumatic brain injury, status epilepticus,
CNS infections, and neuromuscular emergencies are taken care by a
fellowship-trained neurointensivist in association with housestaff,
critical care pharmacists,
dietitians, and critical care nurses.
The service provides care for
critically ill neurologic patients in a designated neurological
intensive care unit with capability to perform
continuous hemodynamic and respiratory support,neurophysiologic
monitoring, and monitoring and management of intracranial pressure. In addition,
post-operative care is provided to patients recovering after
neurosurgical
procedures. Early
management of patients with acute ischemic stroke, management
of patients recovering after endovascular procedures, and consultation in
other
intensive
care units is also available.
