Headache/Pseudotumor Cerebri Program

man holding head with headacheHeadache is one of the most common and yet one of the most disabling neurological conditions in our society. Although most patients with common muscle tension headaches and migraine are very ably cared for by their primary care physicians, some patients do require expert consultation. This is particularly true of patients with complicated migraine, migraine unresponsive to usual care, patients with complicating medical illnesses, and other special situations.

Pseudotumor cerebri (PTC) represents a special condition of headache secondary to chronic increased intracranial pressure. Patients with PTC not only suffer with headache but are at greater risk of visual loss because of increased intracranial pressure. Comprehensive assessment, including possible surgical intervention, may need to be considered in these patients.

The Headache/Pseudotumor Cerebri program calls on many additional specialists to aid in the care of these patients as clinically indicated. Cooperating subspecialties here at MUSC include: Neuropsychology, OB/GYN, Psychiatry, Weight Management Program, Drug/Alcohol Program, Neuroradiology, Ophthamology, and the Anesthesiology Pain Program.
